In a world based around consumerism, it is always refreshing to see some good advertising. The amount of advertising the average person is exposed to per day is debatable, but the 200 million daily tweets alone are enough to classify as an overdose.
I’m partial to outdoor guerilla advertisements myself. I find this tactic to be clever and straight to the point, which makes for a highly memorable ad. But as I spend more and more time scouring the Internet each week, I am becoming increasingly obsessed with viral videos, specifically those whose messages speak indirectly to the product or service they are attempting to sell.
Very unlike my beloved guerillas.
The type of viral video I am referring to is known as Transmedia, which delivers storytelling across multiple platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. This new type of online advertising is pure genius in my opinion, primarily because it mixes entertainment with social media to form an interactive social film experience.
Communicating the exact definition of Transmedia does not come easily. To better explain, I have posted my top two Transmedia picks for you to indulge in- Enjoy.
Warning: Viewing of these videos can be addicting and lead to social media abuse.
THE INSIDE EXPERIENCE
In this epic thriller, Christina, played by Emily Rossum, is kidnapped and locked in a basement with a laptop. Which laptop exactly? The Toshiba Satellite p775 featuring an Intel core i7 processor of course. Episodes are posted to the website every few days, and the audience can interact with the characters in REAL TIME through Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

I am a HUGE fan of all things Harry Potter, so it should then come as no surprise that Pottermore has made the cut. In this partnership between Sony and famous author J.K. Rowling, an online interactive campaign has been created that allows users to manipulate the original Harry Potter stories into their own unique versions. A Pottermore Facebook app has been designed for users to set up their own Harry Potter character and create their own unique wonderful magical world.
Pottermore is open to all in October, but sign up is available now at http://www.pottermore.com/. Don’t forget to follow Pottermore on Twitter for clues and solutions!
The world of online video just got even more exciting and engaging! Transmedia has me super excited for the future of online video and has left me wondering…
Why didn’t I think of that?!
